Moin Moin, nice to meet you! - Speaking English in Hamburg with pedestrians
Today we went to Hamburg for sightseeing and some cultural background. Firstly, we did a round trip in the port and saw several huge container ships which were quite impressing with up to only 20meters separating our boat from theirs. We also got inside the “Elbphilharmonie” and had a look from the “Plaza” onto the “Speicherstadt”. That was also our next destination, where we went by foot. We had a small talk about the historical past of the city and why the buildings have cranes built into them. We continued to the Mönkebergstraße and started with the challenges.
The different missions the adolescents had to master included talking to pedestrians, and of course it had to be in English. To make sure there was no ability to cheat, one of the tasks was for example finding and taking a photograph with a person coming from far away. One group managed to get a photo with a young man from Uruguay! To complete this objective, they of course had to speak English because it is one of the most spoken languages of the world. By doing so, the youngsters realized that it is important and useful to be able to communicate in English.
After the work was done, they had free-time in Hamburg and were ready to explore the city on their own in small groups. All of them got back on time at the central train station and we were good to drive back to the youth hostel in Glückstadt. During the train ride you could look into many exhausted but happy faces.
